Fibreglass and gelcoat repair at Vinyl Make Up

Fibreglass boat repair

Fibreglass laminate, gelcoat and plastic fittings — the same methods we use on leisure vehicles, applied to boats. We repair rather than replace and match the colour to the original.

Fibreglass since 1992

A fibreglass boat is built from the material we know best

A fibreglass boat is laminate with a gelcoat surface — exactly the same material as the shells and body panels we repair on motorhomes and caravans every week. The knowledge of the laminate, the curing and the surface is the same, whether the part is a caravan front or a boat hull.

Our philosophy is to use as much of the original material as possible. We grind out, laminate up and rebuild the strength in the damage rather than cutting away and replacing more than necessary.

Finally we apply gelcoat and match the colour to the original, so the repaired surface blends in instead of reading as a repair.

What we repair on your fibreglass boat

Common damage we repair on fibreglass boats.

  • Hull & laminate damage

Cracks, holes and damage right through the fibreglass laminate — we laminate up and restore both shape and strength.

  • Gelcoat & colour matching

Scratches, spider cracks and faded gelcoat. We repair the surface and match the colour to the original.

  • Delamination & impact damage

Damage where the laminate has separated or been pushed in — we open it up, dry it out and rebuild the laminate.

  • Plastic fittings on board

Hatches, trims and interior plastic parts are repaired, or fabricated anew when the original can't be saved.

Method & materials

How a fibreglass boat repair works

We choose the method to suit the laminate and the damage — the goal is always to preserve as much of the original as possible.

  1. 1

    Assessing damage & laminate

Send photos or bring the boat in. We assess how deep the damage goes and whether it sits in the gelcoat or in structural laminate.

  2. 2

    Grinding out & drying

We grind the damage back to sound laminate and make sure the substrate is dry before building it up again.

  3. 3

    Laminating & rebuilding

We laminate the damage up in layers so that strength and shape are restored to the original construction.

  4. 4

    Gelcoat, colour & finish

We apply gelcoat, match the colour to the original and polish the surface so the repair blends in.

Common questions about fibreglass boat repair

What we're asked most about laminate, gelcoat and colour matching.

Do you repair fibreglass boats?
Yes. Fibreglass boats are built from laminate with a gelcoat surface — the same material we've been repairing on leisure vehicles since 1992. Send us photos of the damage and we'll make an assessment.
Can you repair a hole in the hull, or does it have to be replaced?
Damage right through the laminate can usually be repaired. We grind back to sound material and laminate the damage up in layers so the strength is restored — whole sections rarely need replacing.
Can you match the gelcoat colour?
Yes. Colour matching is central to our work — we match the gelcoat to the original so the repair blends in rather than showing.
What can be done about spider cracks and faded gelcoat?
Surface spider cracks and faded areas are addressed in the gelcoat and polished up. We first assess whether the cracks are superficial or run down into the laminate.
Do you take on insurance claims for boats?
Get in touch with your case and we'll look at it. We're used to handling insurance and warranty cases and will help you with assessment and documentation.
