Excess on motorhome and caravan damage – how it works
Published 25 June 2026 · 3 min read
The excess determines how much you pay yourself when damage occurs. Here are the basics and how we help you through the claim.
What is the excess?
The excess is the part of the repair cost you pay yourself on an insurance claim, with the insurer covering the rest. The size of the excess depends on your insurer and your specific policy.
For motorhomes and caravans the excess can vary by type of damage — collision, theft and fire may have different levels, for example. Always check the terms of your own policy.
Who pays what?
On an approved claim you pay the excess and the insurer covers the remaining repair cost. We often invoice the insurer directly for their share, so you only pay your excess.
We handle the contact and documentation with most insurance companies, which makes the process simpler for you.
Is it worth filing a claim?
If the repair cost is only a little higher than the excess, or if a claim affects your no-claims bonus, it can sometimes be better to pay yourself. For larger damage, a claim is usually the right route.
We help you assess the damage so you can make an informed decision before filing.
